Now that we know that Jake Delhomme is out for the season, expect the Panthers to look, and look hard for a QB on the market, either via trade or to pick up a free agent QB. GM Marty Hurney stated on Tuesday that the team was hoping to have a QB under contract by the end of the day, but that did not happen and it looks as if the Panthers might be back and forth as to what QB to go after.
The Charlotte Observer reports that the team had interest in former 49’ers and Bucs QB Tim Rattay, but the Cardinals scooped him up Tuesday after placing Matt Leinart on IR with a collarbone injury. The cupboard is not exactly stocked with quality free agent QB’s, among them that could be had include Todd Bouman, Aaron Brooks, Rohan Davey, Tim Hasselbeck and Koy Detmer.
Right now the team is riding the QB spot with David Carr, but despite being 1-1 as the teams new QB, he has been rather unimpressive, and his backup in unproven Matt Moore, who is a rookie who has thrown only two passes. Carr was banged up on Sunday at New Orleans and hurt his back. He is though expected to be available to play this week in Arizona.
One QB on the trade market whose name has been thrown around is now Bears backup QB Rex Grossman. He was benched for Brian Griese, and is a free agent at the end of the season. Bears GM Jerry Angello stated that Grossman was not on the market to be moved, but if the Panthers want to explore that route, I would be willing to bet that the Bears would talk about sending Grossman to another team for a draft pick.
