A career day by Houston Texans kicker Kris Brown made it possible for the Texans to avoid a three game losing streak. He kicked a 57 yard field goal with a second remaining to boost the Texans (3-2) over the Miami Dolphins 22-19. Brown’s 57 yard effort helped him tie a NFL record of making 3 FG’s over 50 yards. Meanwhile, the Dolphins (0-5) are off to their worst start since they lost 6 consecutive games in 2004.
The Texans took an early lead when running back Ron Dayne ran for a 1-yard touchdown; that score was the first time all season that the Texans scored on their opening drive. Hosuton led 7-3 after the first quarter when Texans quarterback Matt Schaub threw an interception. On the next play, Dolphins QB Trent Green attempted to block after a fumble by WR Ted Ginn, Jr. when defensive tackle Travis Johnson kneed Green in the head. The end result was Green suffering a concussion; Johnson was flagged for taunting Green after the hit.
QB Cleo Lemon took over for Green then Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown gave the Dolphins the lead with a 3-yard TD run. Dolphins K Jay Feely upped the team’s lead to 13-7 with a 40-yard FG in the 2nd quarter. A lost fumble by Schaub allowed the Dolphins to up their lead to 16-7 with a Feely 33-yard FG. Schaub’s pass to tight end Owen Daniels got houston to the Dolphins’ 4-yard line but the Texans had to settle for another FG that tied the game at 19. On the Texans’ winning drive, Schaub hit on 4 of 5 passes to set up the winning FG by Brown.
Lemon finished the game with 15-of-27 passing for 151 yards and 1 interception. RB Ronnie Brown finished with 23 carries for 114 yards. Schaub led the Texans with 294 yards on 20-of-34 passing, including an interception. TE Daniels led all Texans receivers with 96 yards on 6 receptions. The winless Dolphins next visit the 2-3 Cleveland Browns on October 14, while the Texans next fly to Jacksonville to face the Jaguars.
