Given the extremely high expectations, starting 1-3 this season might be the lowest point in the franchise’s history. It is certainly a gigantic disappointment because a roster with this much talent doesn’t happen too often and won’t stay forever. After the first two losses, it was easy to place all the blame on Norv Turner, hoping that he would figure things out and turn it around “next week.” When Norv couldn’t figure it out against Kansas City, it was time to blame A.J. Smith and Dean Spanos for running a 14-2 coach out of town an appointing an incompetent Turner. You can’t let the players off easy either, they still have to go out and perform no matter who is coaching them and they haven’t been playing well.
Head Coach Norv Turner provided us a glaring example of why he is an inept football coach and not good for the Chargers. First of all LaDainian Tomlinson gained 116 yards on 14 carries in the first half of Sunday’s loss to the Chiefs, but in the 2nd half he was only given 6 carries and gained 16 yards. You’ve got to wonder what the hell Norv was thinking, the Chiefs couldn’t stop LT so Norv did it for them. To put the icing on the cake, in the 4th quarter the Chargers had the ball with a first and goal from the 5-yard line. LT didn’t touch the ball once and on fourth down he stayed in the backfield to block. The guy who scored the most TD’s in any season ever was ordered to block when his team needed a TD more than ever. The bottom line is the Chargers shouldn’t have lost this game and they lost it because Norv Turner abandoned the game-plan when he took the ball out of LT’s hands.
On Monday, LT told the media, “At halftime, we talked about coming out and running the football and I though that was going to be a point of emphasis for us, but it didn’t happen.” So what was Norv Thinking? He said, “When we ran the ball in the second half, we did not run the ball as well as we did in the first half.” When you don’t give LT a chance to get going of course you won’t establish the running game. It seems like Turner makes a lot of poor coaching decisions but who could have foreseen that a guy who has a career record of 59-85. Certainly not A.J Smith or Dean Spanos.
Asking Smith and Spanos not to dismantle the franchise by firing a great coach and hiring a lame coach is like asking Trevor Hoffman not to blow two saves in 3 days to end the Padres’ season. Those 2 things, plain and simple, shouldn’t have happened except for the fact that there has to be some sort of bad luck or honestly even a curse in San Diego. Looking back at San Diego sports history, it seems like the sporting gods have just dangled the promised fruit right in front of San Diego fan’s faces only to rip it away as they open their mouths for a taste of the glory.
The worst part about the decision to fire Marty was that they did it after their two coordinators were hired as head coaches elsewhere and all of the other leading head coaching candidates were already taken. Marty wasn’t fired for losing the playoff game; he was fired because he and Smith couldn’t get along. Smith shouldn’t have let that drag out. He had to know that Marty had to go well before the decision was made. There is no doubt that decision should have been made way sooner so that they could have replaced him with a qualified head coach instead of one who wasn’t good enough for the rest of the NFL. If Turner were a good coach he would have been hired by the time San Diego got to him.
Regardless of who is calling the plays and what plays they are calling, the players still have to execute and they haven’t been. Not one player has lived up to his expectations so far this season. Someone needs to step up and play “lights out.” The players should take only a minimal amount of the blame because they are playing hard but the Coaches aren’t putting them in positions to make plays and win ball games.
Something needs to change in San Diego, there is no doubt Norv Turner is on the hot seat but now it seems that A.J. Smith should be working on his resume as well. Maybe the Chargers can fire both of them immediately and bring back Marty because the Turner/Smith combo STINKS!!!!
