The Kansas City Chiefs visit the Chicago Bears this Sunday, hoping to reverse their fortunes; the Chiefs lost to the Houston Texans last week 20-3 as their offense sputtered, gaining only 219 total yards. The 0-1 Bears are looking to stop another star running back this week in the Chiefs’ Larry Johnson, who gained only 43 yards last Sunday.
The Chiefs hope to improve both their passing and running games overall; Chiefs quarterback Damon Huard proved ineffective last week vs. the Texans, throwing for only 168 yards while getting intercepted twice and getting sacked 3 times. Bears QB Rex Grossman fared no better, going only 12-for-23 for 145 yards with an INT against a stout Chargers defense. The Bears lost 2 key players for the season – safety Mike Brown and defensive tackle Dusty Dvoracek. Danieal Manning will replace Brown in the secondary while Darwin Walker will take over for Dvoracek.
The Chiefs, in order to win this weekend, will without a doubt need more carries and yardage from Johnson as well as a better effort from Huard, although that will be difficult with Bears LB Brian Urlacher being in the mix often. The Chiefs simply need to provide a much better effort overall defensively; blitzing packages may be what the doctor ordered for the Chiefs as Grossman can be pressured into making mistakes. The Bears will need a much better performance from Grossman and their overall running game as RB Cedric Benson ran for only 42 yards last weekend.
Don’t expect a lot of offense up in Chicago this weekend as defense will dominate the contest. Johnson should improve upon his performance from last week, but the Bears defense will overwhelm the Chiefs offensive line and Grossman will play just well enough to propel the Bears to 1-1 this weekend.
