The Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro guard Alan Faneca, as we all know, has been pushing for an improvement on his current contract. The Steelers, on the other hand, have a long-standing policy of not negotiating contracts during the regular season. So where does this leave Faneca? According to Scott Brown of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, guard Kendall Simmons, in response to a text message sent by Faneca, replied about an extension the team gave him recently. Faneca replied with congratulations.
Could this innocent text messaging exchange be the straw that breaks the camel’s back? Maybe, maybe not. Faneca, to his credit, has been professional during training camp. He told the Tribune-Review, “It’s gotten me at times, but I think for the most part I’ve done a pretty good job of staying focused on what I need to do.” If the indicators currently out there mean anything, Faneca may get what he wants. It just will not happen in Pittsburgh, which is unfortunate, considering that Faneca is one of the top offensive lineman in the NFL. Anything is possible between now and Sunday, but with each passing moment, the chances of Faneca signing an extension with the Steelers shrinks.
