The quarterback position in Oakland remains a question after Friday night’s 20-10 win over the St.Louis Rams. While the Raiders are 2-1 in the preseason, the team is still up in the air as to who the starter will be come September 9th at home vs the Lions. Last night it was Daunte Culpepper getting the start, the third different QB to start for the Raiders this preseason. Culpepper seemed to have a decent command of the offense, going 4-for-8 for 47 yards and a score. This past week in practice he has seemed to take control of the starting QB spot from the two other QB’s in camp, Andrew Walter and Josh McCown. “I feel like I have a lot to offer a club,” Culpepper said. “I feel like I’m a starter, but at the same time I have to do what’s best for the team.”
Head coach Lane Kiffin was not so quick to hand the job over to the former Viking and Dolphin QB, but said that more would have to go in to picking the teams starter for the Lions. “Ideally, it would have been a month ago,” Kiffin said. “We’ll go back and we might have an answer for you tomorrow or we might not and go into this next game without an answer.” So far this preseason, Culpepper is 15-for-28 for 200 yards, 3 TD’s and no picks. His QB rating is 112.2, well above that of Walter and McCown.
Walter, who was with the team last season, is 20-for-33 for 154 yards with one TD and one INT. His QB rating is 69.5. McCown is 19-for-35, 277 yards and no TD’s and no interceptions. His rating is 80.3. The team reportedly wanted McCown, who they got the in offseason, to be the teams starter, but has seemed to have failed in his opportunity to clinch the starting position. Sources continue to say that either McCown or Walter will be either traded or released once the QB spot is clinched, as the team will keep Culpepper as the starter, McCown or Watler, and then eventually will come to terms with first pick of the draft JaMarcus Russell.
For now, the QB position still seems to be leaning towards Culpepper, who was not overwhelming, but good enough in the win over the Rams. While Walter and McCown still have a shot, my bet would be Daunte as the opening day starter, Walter (Atlanta) on another roster, and McCown as the backup until they get Russell in camp.
