Most teams want to have their starters at least close to ready to go after this set of preseason games starting tonight with the Saints at Chiefs. Most teams seem to be finding that stride to be set for the first week of the regular season, but there are still some lingering questions at the most important position of the team – the quarterback spot – for a number of teams out there. Here is a quick look at where some of the QB battles stand for those teams that have yet to decide on a signal caller.
Kansas City (Brodie Croyle vs Damon Huard) – This past week the battle has shifted greatly, as Huard has had to miss practice time with a calf injury. Croyle, who the team really wanted to win the QB spot in the first place, likely will now have this battle wrapped up with even a decent showing tonight against the Saints. Watching both guys though, I am not convinced that we won’t see Huard at least some throughout the regular season.
Cleveland (Charlie Frye vs Derek Anderson vs Brady Quinn) – Things are getting very interesting by the Lakefront, as last weeks fourth quarter garbage time showing by Quinn has got the sports talk phone lines in Cleveland lit up. Coach Romeo Crennel then came out Tueesday and said the QB battle was between Frye and….another QB. Who that QB is we don’t know, but sources say it very well may be Quinn. Bottom line, if anyone other than Quinn wins the job, he’ll only be keeping the seat warm for a few weeks till Quinn is ready.
Oakland (Andrew Walter vs Josh McCown vs Daunte Culpepper) – Culpepper could be the comeback story of the year if he wins this job and then holds off number one pick JaMarcus Russell once he signs and has a good season. He has shown flashes in two preseason games of being back to 100 percent, and you have to give him props for not just wanting to bag it and hold a clipboard for the rest of his career. You might see Walter or McCown released once this battle is set, and a good showing as the starter for Culpepper against the Rams this weekend might just do that.
Atlanta (Joey Harrington vs Chris Redman vs ???) – Harrington is still the starter, but only by default. Look for Atlanta to spend a great deal of time looking at QB’s that are released or to look to possibly trade for one, as this team is going to need at least a servicable arm once the season starts. Names floating out there to go to the ATL include Walter, McCown, Kelly Holcomb, and the loser of Frye or Anderson in Cleveland.
