Holcomb Still Waiting to See What His Future Holds for 2007

HolcombEagles QB Kelly Holcomb continues to sit and wait as to what the future will hold and where he will be playing in 2007.  Holcomb, now the 4th string QB in Philly, knows that the odds of him even making the roster are slim, but knows as well there are some teams out there (Atlanta and Minnesota come to mind) that would take him on for the 07 season.  “I can’t control what people are saying,” Holcomnb said. “All I can control is myself. If I do that, then everything else will be fine and work itself out.”  There have been plenty of rumors about him and where he may be headed next.  The Falcons and Vikings both may need some insurance at the QB spot with both starting QB’s not exactly guys that have been able to tear up the league in the past.

The one thing that Holcomb is steadfast in knowing is that once the 07 season starts, he will not be wearing the green of the Eagles.  “I had to come to grips with that. Sometimes, it’s hard,” he said. “I had to come to the realization that, ‘Hey, you’ve just got to go out and do your job, do the best that you can do. If it’s not here, if you do a good job for coach [Andy] Reid, he knows a lot of people; you’ll be somewhere else.’  Reid is another fan of Holcomb’s, and seems to be impressed with how he is taking care of the situation.  “Kelly … could start for a lot of teams in the NFL and help them win a championship,” Reid said. “I like the way he’s handled himself. He understands the situation and is taking advantage of every opportunity that he can.”

So while being on a team like the Falcons or Vikings might translate into playing time, there is also a thought that Holcomb may want to go to a team that is on the verge of winning a Super Bowl.  “You’ve got to be realistic about it. I’m coming up on the twilight of my career,” Holcomb said. “I’d like to be on a winner. Although you want to play, it’s all about winning ballgames. It’s about trying to be a Super Bowl [champion]. I think we’ve got an excellent opportunity to do that.”  Who that team might be, is anyone’s guess.  Unless there are a rash of injuries at the QB spot for the Eagles, one thing you can bank on is Holcomb being in another zip code come opening day September 9th.
