The Cowboys return to San Antonio and the Alamodome with a “Kickoff-Off Spectacular” tomorrow night with the first practice to begin Wednesday afternoon. As is customary for the team, only one of this year’s draft picks has been signed, that being their sixth round pick Deon Anderson. Talks with first rounder Anthony Spencer’s agent have just started, however all of the draftees are fully expected to report to camp and start practicing with the rest of the team.
Why is it so late in the day that the Cowboys start their negotiations, you might ask. Well, apparently that is unknown for certain, the most reasonable explanation is that they have always done it this way. Whether it’s the agents who are unsure of making any early deals that will hurt them later or the organizations’ desire to wait and broker a better deal than other teams, there seem to be several reasons.
With expectations high for this year’s team, the only true question is when and what deal can they make with Spencer since his contribution to this year’s team seems most critical and having him in camp and happy would seem paramount to fulfilling those expectations.
