Let the backlash of Michael Vick begin. At least when it comes to his endorsement deals. Vick’s legal issues have cost him his new Nike shoes being released in stores, as the company suspended the release of its latest product line named after the Falcons QB. The Air Zoom Vick V was to be released this summer, but Nike has told retailers it will not release the shoe. For now, the current line of Vick shoes remain in stores, but one has to wonder if that is going to last after all the backlash he is taking over the charges against him.
For now, Nike says they still have a deal with Vick, but have not commented any further about the future of their deal. A statement released by Nike Inc. said the company “is concerned by the serious and highly disturbing allegations made against Michael Vick, and we consider any cruelty to animals inhumane and abhorrent. We do believe that Michael Vick should be afforded the same due process as any citizen; therefore, we have not terminated our relationship.” The company does not though have any commericals planned with Vick as of now.
Vick has had a deal with Nike since 2001, the same year the Falcons drafted him as the NFL’s No. 1 overall draft pick. You can bet that every company that does business with Vick, and maybe even the Falcons, are going to have to take a hard look at just how far the backlash is going to go. Many fans have already stated they will not support the Falcons anymore, and some of our readers have even stated that they are going to have a hard time watching the NFL product as a whole.
