Broncos Tight End Scheffler on Schedule for Training Camp Return

SchefflerBroncos tight end Tony Scheffler is being told that his broken left foot should be healed enough that he will be ready to go by the start of the teams training camp. Denver’s summer training camp is set to kickoff on July 28th. “At this point I’m not terribly concerned about it,” Scheffler said Tuesday to the Rocky Mountain News after the teams final mini-camp. Scheffler was a threat last season for the Broncos as they got near the goal line, as he caught just 18 balls for 286 yards, but four of his 18 catches were for touchdowns.

The 2nd year player from Western Michigan has slimmed down this past offseason, dropping from about 265 to 254, which is more his target playing weight. As far as the foot goes, “they’ve stressed to me I should be about ready to go come camp,” he said. “But it’s kind of hard to guess what will happen in the next two or three weeks.” He had a screw inserted in the foot back on May 21st to repair a split in his 5th metatarsal. He had been wearing a protective boot up until about last week. “You can get into all kinds of different things, with the blood flow to that bone; I’ve heard a lot of different things,” said Scheffler. “But we have a lot of good doctors and my surgeon’s contacted a lot of specialists around the country on this injury. I have confidence in them.”

The current rehab program for Scheffler calls for pool exercises. The time away from having to be on the field has given him a shot to concentrate on weight lifting work and gaining more strength in his upper body. With the foot healing and the timetable set for him to be on the field in late July, look for the Broncos tight end to have a bigger and better season in 2007.
