The Saints have signed former New York Giant and Philadelphia Eagle LB Dhani Jones to a one-year contract. The former 6th round Wolverine draft pick in 2000 recorded 76 tackles. He is 29 years old and played his best year with New York in 2003 (120 tackles and three sacks.) Jones has not reached the century mark since then in tackles, and was limited to a back-up role in Philly. He will likely remain a reserve behind former Cincinnati veteran Brian Simmons at MLB. This marks the second year in a row that the Saints have taken a LB from Philly (Mark Simoneau last year.) It’s another small piece for New Orleans, as they’re trying to bolster their defense and improve their depth. The Saints need to close the gap on defense because they were not capable last January of taking the next step to becoming a balanced team – losing to the Bears in the NFC Championship Game – allowing 39 points at Soldier Field. This team’s strength is at DE with Will Smith and Charles Grant, any extra production from the DT’s and LB’s is an added bonus.
