The Bucs continue to hold out that former Cardinals and Broncos QB Jake Plummer will find it in himself to play again in 2007, and play in Tampa Bay. If Plummer decides to come in, it would not only help Tampa Bay at the QB spot, but also could really help them in that they could look at trading one of the current QB’s already on the roster. GM Bruce Allen says in today’s Tampa Tribune that the trade market could be busy, and that Tampa Bay could be very involved.
“There’s some good names being floated around,” Allen said in the paper. “Whether they actually occur or not, we’ll have to see. There could be some trades in this league. “We’re listening. If we feel there’s a player that can come in and help us, we’ll absolutely go get him.” Allen said that he and Plummer recently spoke, and that he thinks they will talk again. If Plummer decides not to show up, he will be considered a holdout, and not count on the 53-man roster. He has not yet filed official retirement papers.
“If he elects not to report to camp, [it’s] no different than when Keenan McCardell didn’t report to camp or when you see other players hold out,” Allen said. “There’s no difference.” If Plummer does report, the player that will most be on the hot seat at the QB spot is Chris Simms. Already behind the 8-ball with last year’s spleen injury, Simms didn’t even get any reps during Wednesday’s team drills. Head coach Jon Gruden said that Simms would get reps Thursday at practice, but then the coach went and gave the players the day off.
“I see Chris’ future no different than it has been the last few years,” Allen said. “He’s one of the hardest workers you’re going to find. He loves the game of football and he will regain his stroke because he’s dedicated to the game.” Sure Bruce. Bottom line is that if Plummer comes in, Simms will be shopped around. Right now as things stand, Simms is not worth much on the open market. I can’t see him garnering more than a 4th or 5th round pick. If the Bucs could get that today though knowing that Plummer will join the fray along with Jeff Garcia, then you can kiss Simms good-bye.
