Thoughts On the Early Games

* So much for my upset special of the week, as the Cowboys trounced the Titans 45-14 in Tennessee. The Boys looked strong, with T.O. catching 5 balls for 88 yards, and the running game going though the Titans D for 217 yards on 41 carries, averaging 5.2 yards per carry. The distraction all week with Owens cleary was not a factor, as after falling behind 3-0 Dallas took control and never really looked back. Give Bill Parcells major props for not allowing his team a letdown after the entire week of being asked about Owens’ status. Now the overhyped showdown with the Eagles looms, with that game being talked about as the “must see” game of week 5.

* The Ravens impressed me this week, and now at 4-0 must be considered as a threat in the AFC. With a close 16-13 win over the formally unbeaten Chargers at home, they look like contenders a lot more this week than the pretenders last week in their narrow win over the Browns. Of course the Chargers did themselves no favors with a missed field goal, 10 penalties and two an interception. Steve McNair will still be the Ravens downfall in my opinion, as his stats of 17-for-30 with 158 and two picks won’t get it done in January. Of course he did get the game-winning score to Todd Heap with less than a minute to go, something that Kyle Boller likely wouldn’t have done a season ago.

* The Dolphins are in deep trouble after losing to the Texans 17-15 in Houston. Miami shouldn’t have beaten the Titans last week, and easily could be 0-4 instead of 1-3. And how about that goofy play on the two-point conversion with Ronnie Brown trying to throw the ball to on the play instead of Daunte Culpepper? The play just looked bad from the start, and after being the early pick to win the AFC East, now they are looking up at the other three teams in the division.

* Early picks not off to a hot start – 4-4 through the first 8 games. I realized that I was throwing out a real upset with the Titans, but I don’t think many people had the Dolphins losing, the Vikings I thought were a safe bet in Buffalo, and the Chargers game was a toss up. Let’s hope that the 4pm games go a lot better.
